A smart meter is a next-generation gas or electricity meter that automatically sends your energy readings to your supplier. The SMETS1 Switching Problem

Which Do I Have?

Are Smart Meters Compulsory?

No. Smart meters are entirely voluntary. Your energy supplier is required to offer you a smart meter, but you are under no obligation to accept one. You cannot be forced to have a smart meter installed, and there is no penalty for declining.

However, it is worth noting that suppliers are under government targets to offer smart meters to all their customers. This means you may receive repeated letters, emails, or phone calls encouraging you to book an installation. You are within your rights to decline each time.
