ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)
The ECO4 scheme requires large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in homes across the UK. As a pensioner, particularly if you receive Pension Credit or other qualifying benefits, you may be eligible for free improvements including loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, and in some cases a new, more efficient boiler.
The scheme is designed to improve the energy efficiency of the least efficient homes first, so if your property has a low Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, you may be given priority. You do not need to apply through your energy supplier directly. Many local councils and approved installers can check your eligibility and arrange the work for you.
Great British Insulation Scheme
This scheme specifically targets homes that would benefit from better insulation. If you are a homeowner or private tenant and your property is poorly insulated, you may qualify for free or heavily subsidised cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, or flat roof insulation. Pensioners receiving means-tested benefits are prioritised under this scheme.
Good insulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce energy bills long-term. A well-insulated home can save hundreds of pounds every year and makes your home warmer and more comfortable throughout the winter months.
Local Authority Grants and Support
Many local councils offer their own grants and support schemes for pensioners. These vary across the country but can include emergency heating repair funds, grants for boiler replacements, and energy efficiency advice services. Contact your local council to ask what is available in your area, or ask SaveFirst to check on your behalf.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
If you own your home and your boiler is old and inefficient, you may qualify for a grant of up to £7,500 towards the cost of a heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. While heat pumps are not suitable for every property, they can dramatically reduce heating costs for those homes where they work well. The grant covers a significant portion of the installation cost.
